Others Shoes Experiment

Me, Alec, Jordan and Adam were ready to spend our Labor Day holyday as Star Wars fans. I was dressing as Darth Vader, Alec dressed up as a Stormtrooper and Jordan dressed himself as a crazy random farm guy. Adam would film and take pictures of us and the people’s reaction.
Even before reaching our destination we could notice reactions from people in other cars passing by. The Crazy Random Farm Guy was driving the car with the Stormtrooper by his side. Darth Vader and the Camera Boy were in the back seats. It was impossible not to laugh. Imagine yourself driving to your home in a normal day and all the sudden a car filled with people dressing as Star Wars characters passes by you. I would kill myself laughing. And that is what other people were doing.
We arrived at the mall and we could already see people’s reaction. An old lady stopped us to ask “OK, what is that all about?”, very nicely and controlling herself not to laugh. Adam answered “We are looking for the Star Wars convention”. “May the force be with you” added Darth Vader. In the very next moment, a security guard truck passed us by and the guard that was in it starred at us. But then he moved on.
We entered in the sport’s shop, which was crowded. It was difficult for me to SEE people’s reaction because of my Darth Vader mask. But it was easy to feel that people were looking at us. We headed to the golf section, and we TRIED to act like we were interested in the products. A boy was playing mini golf, he stopped. He was definitely scarred. We would walk through the shop and people would react differently. Mostly of them laughed, but there were some that looked at us with that face that clearly says “you are retarded”. Majority of the little kids were confused or scared. One kid was starring at me and I said “May the force be with you”. He didn’t respond. I have to check if I really said that in English. It was definitely darthvadersih.
When we left the sport shop and entered in the actually mall, I gently went to the direction of a group of children. They were scared. We sat on the food place. It was really funny, because everybody was looking at us. We stood up and continued to walk.
To be continued.

Other Shoes Project

Members: Thomas, Alec, Jordan and Adam.

Our idea is to dress up as Darth Vader or any other Star Wars character. At the beginning, we couldn't find social labels behind it, we just thought it was really funny (Darth Vader + Anything = Humor). But then we realised that there actually is a group of people that dresses up like that, even being out of Halloween time. Those people are the Star Wars Lovers, a.k.a nerds and geeks.

Our MISSION is to feel how it is to be a geeky-nerdy-star-wars-lover in a society that doesn't understand the things that they know. After all, they watched all 6 SWs movies and understood it. (Don't pretend you understand it, because you don't - neither do I)

It is very easy to predict that there will be people starring, laughing, shouting at us and thinking that we are... strange. (You shouldn't stereotype someone just because this person is wearing a Darth Vader costume in public - Just kitting, let's not be hypocrites: There is no way to NOT judge someone wearing a Darth Vader costume in public.)
